The elegiac two-hour finale, starring John Thaw, is the last we’ll see of the unforgettable, dyspeptic chief inspector of the Thames Valley Police. Perhaps least obvious are the programs’ unselfconscious clarity of style. Thanks to Thaw and Dexter and executive dwy Ted Childs, Morse ranks in that pantheon of memorable, fully and artfully fleshed creations. It all gets a little murky, like the fog that sometimes envelops Oxford, the beautifully realized setting of most of the Morse stories.
