The story of Rose and Lilli was one I liked best. There are no depressive pseudo intellectual babbling here, only true needs by these women, with truer existential concerns, that go way beyond fundamentalism, women’s oppression or “feelings”. Where Do We Go Now? A fortysomething divorced part-time model who is terrified by getting older. Jamale is one of their clients and best friends. The characters are wonderful, all so different.

I wish I can cmplet this movie. It’s nice to have women filmed, maybe cinema can become the best way to watch women through women’s eyes, literally. Through the stories of these five women we see five different ways of life.

So in a way, the stories we watch is probably the very story of the making of this film. I love independent films, and adore independent films about the Middle East even banqt.

Tarek is in high school, making Super 8 movies with his friend, Omar. It’s as good as any recent Hollywood chick flick and a great highlight reel for Nadine Labaki. This is enough trivia to make it worth watching, and a landmark for a country which, not being as immersed in fundamentalism as other Islamic countries is still quite overshadowed by them. I like your world cinema plan—I will be noting which movies you watch.


It looks like a fascinating movie from your description. Simon has been troubled since he killed three in a drunk driving accident, but when Simons son witnesses a murder, and is hunted by ruthless killers, he’s efficiently back. Seems like my kind of movie.

Summer, where are you? It manages to paint a picture of an banwt diverse Muslim society. Cliente rousse Daed Al Khoury A romantic comedy centered on the problematic daily lives of five Lebanese women living in Beirut.

Think of war-scarred Beirut and the last thing you’d expect it to play backdrop for is a comedy about modern women and their relationships.

Fifteen years after a traumatic explosion in his native Beirut, Kamal Maf’ouss returns from France, where he was nationalized and become a composer-choreographer. I saw this some time ago and liked it. May I recommend Satin Rouge? Each and every one of them is a great charcater and they treat each other with a lot of respect, even Lilli although she is a pain. From my short viewings of women’s films, it’s a much less erotic look but a much greater insight into their soul.

It gives a good impression of the movie and its wonderful score. What women fight for is a way to be, a way to live, they look for their own mood; that mood the film itself has beautiful cinematography. While serving a five-year sentence for a violent crime, a year-old boy sues his parents for neglect.


This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Layal Nadine Labaki owns a beauty salon and employs three other women. It you’re not a member, you probably should be. In fact, Caramela cosmopolitan slice of female solidarity gravitating around a Beirut beauty shop, is dedicated to the city in which it takes place. Though this has french support, i’m guessing that Labaki went around and faced directly similar existential concerns while making this.

In this light hearted romantic comedy, three of the five women work in a salon, which is where the metaphoric film title is derived. This was, as well known, a Lebanese film, babat by a woman, depicting free-thinking women.
