It is difficult to convince men of Samoa to change their deeply engrained beliefs and cultural practices that restrict women. Khosrow Siisiialafia, Ben Percival and Elvina Tuiletufuga were the most experienced video makers in the workshops. They were both inspired by the power of filmmaking and are collaborating on their own pocket documentary, Choosing Her Path. She saw this as the opportunity to reshape the future of nofotane women. It is for Nofotane women who have previously trained on livelihood skills under the United Nation Women Fund for Gender Equality Project, and have progressed to become earners and or breadwinners for their families. UN Women Samoa’s Papali’i Mele Mauala’ivao said the project aimed to economically empower nofotane, help them contribute to their communities and gain a sense of pride. One of the most gratifying experiences as the mentor and trainer on these films was hearing how young people experience the issues of gender equality and then helping them to realise a vision of communicating their message to others.
