Al may be a cutthroat and a pimp, but he has his soft spots the same as every man. Sign Up Sign In. And yet Al demonstrates throughout the hour that he has as much of a weakness for her as she does for him, and Ian McShane has a lot of fun playing Al in a position of weakness and confusion. Very few historical governments — be they democracies, monarchies or in between, have risen without some suggestion that the poor will wind up shouldering more of the burden than the rich. Trixie makes the mistake, for instance, of trying to instruct Al on exactly how and when to punish her for shooting the abusive john, when in other circumstances he might have shrugged off the activity from his favorite whore, or at least given her a lighter beating. When we met Al Swearengen two episodes ago, he was a man concerned with profit and with protecting his territory, and it seemed the most expedient way for him to do that was through violence.

But Doc turns out to be both lucky and smart, as Dan is understandably reluctant to murder a child, and as Jane and Charlie turn up at just the right moment and location for Doc to figure out how to spirit the girl off into the night. Season 1, Episode 6: Both are strong, smart, outspoken women, but their circumstances, their personal histories and the social laws of the world in which they live has essentially enslaved them to these two men who are fixated on them, but can only have them to an extent. In the first, here we have Calamity Jane, iconic if oft-disputed heroine of the Old West, and Al destroys her with just a look and a few well-chosen words. What did everybody else think?

This brutal, amoral mining camp had a long, complicated road towards becoming a place that could acceptably be absorbed into the United States. Then Milch cast Powers Boothe, but Boothe took ill shortly before the pilot was supposed to film. What did everybody else think? And after the jump, the real swears swason be featured. It obviously keeps the tension up, but Milch will at times get a bit elastic about it, in which certain events clearly happened the day before while more time seems to have passed between others.

Wild Bill is a man who has listened to the thunder many times in his life, has sometimes faced it down, and sometimes run, but always survived — and who here is ready to let the thunder take him. He makes an outstanding power behind the throne — even if the throne is being occupied, hilariously, by E. This is the latter; click here for the veteran-friendly version. Also, most of the sets were practical, so the interior of several buildings were on the other side of the wall that spilled out onto the thoroughfare.

Especially given who her pimp is. But no, Al Swearengen and Deaddwood Bullock were as real as Wild Bill, and these three men for now represent a kind of continuum of the state of law — or the lack thereof — in Deadwood at this particular point in time.

Why does Bullock do what he does? What did everybody else think? This brutal, amoral mining camp had a long, complicated road towards becoming a place that could acceptably be absorbed into the United States.

Joanie seems to have more power at the Bella Union, but not really. Charlie tips over after his vaccination, then gets into one of his usual shouting matches with Jane, whose bedside manner comes and goes.

What a showcase for Keith Carradine. Bullock, and now things get even squirmier with the revelation about his family. The relationship between Al and Wu is marvelous.

No fuss, no xeason, and no law to get on his back about it. But still, so many moments in this hour make me smile, and fill me with hope for humanity.

‘Deadwood’ Rewind: Season 1, Episode 2: ‘Deep Water’ (Newbies edition)

We were introduced to Doc last week helping to deal with the aftermath of Trixie shooting the abusive john, and at the time the implication was that the town sawbones was in the pocket of the town crimelord. And just as Tom Nuttall and the others grab Jack, and Seth and Jane charge towards the Number 10, a rider comes in with a decapitated Indian head to win the bounty Al promised back in the first episode.

Trixie had an opportunity to leave town, to have all the money she could need, and to have Sofia to care for. But Wild Bill represents the past.

Or, in some cases, no plan. Jane in turn decides her levels of self-loathing are sufficient that she needs to get out of Deadwood as soon as possible. Always funny — especially since, after all his fretting, they wind up being largely ignored by the men at the table. What did everybody else think? You can see in his eyes that he knows McCall or someone equally hostile has just entered the bar, even with his back turned, in the same way that he knew Tom Mason had designs to harm him, and he takes no action whatsoever.

Last week, I talked about how the series pilot seemed to be setting up three central characters in Bullock, Wild Bill and Swearengen, with the two white hats destined to come into conflict with the shady saloon keeper.

Wu, the episode also let Milch and his casting people bring in a pair of actors from his cop show past.
